Chess

Last year our Chess Club really got up and running.  Our Chess coordinator, Mr Gary Gibbon, took a team to Melbourne to compete in the National Interschool Chess Championships at Monash University.  At lunch time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays students learn and play chess in the library.  On Mondays after school, our chess kids and the chess kids from St Thomas More PS come to the library for extra chess tuition and practice.

Margaret River Primary School will be hosting the first Margaret River Zone Regional School Chess Tournament on Friday August 22 this year. It will feature both primary and secondary divisions. Your school is invited to participate and field a team.

CHESS TOURNAMENT RESULTS:

The Margaret River Primary School Chess team came a very close second to Donnybrook District High School in the inaugural Margaret River Regional School Chess Championships held in the school library last Friday. The team finished with a score of 20 points to Donnybrook’s 22.5 points with St Thomas More on 9.5 points in third position.

Alex finished in outright second position with 6 points. Jamie in his first tournament finished a very creditable fourth and Chay, Shane and Kirra all tied in 6th position. Nakeesha and Amber finished out of the medal tally, but played some fine chess during the tournament. Well done all players and keep the enthusiasm going during Monday afternoon chess.

Players from Margaret River PS, Donnybrook SHS and St Thomas More PS competed all day.  Donnybrook SHS took out the gold medal, Margaret River the silver, and Thomas More the bronze.

NATIONAL INTERSCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Margaret River Primary School sent teams to Melbourne in 2007 and 2008, to compete in the National Championship.  We look forward to sending our third team across this year, 2009.  For more information, see:  Chess Kids
